Lavender Essential Oil

Author: Hulya Kusella, Integrative Counsellor, Holistic Life Coach and an Certified Essential Oils Consultant

We often find ourselves owning a multitude of products to improve our health and treat physical injuries or conditions at home. Most of the products bought in stores contain synthetics or some amount of toxins that can cause allergic reactions, sensitivity or in-tolerances. Wouldn't it be reassuring to know that what you are applying to you skin is of an 100% pure form and can heal many conditions without containing harsh chemicals and owning numerous products?

Lavender

(Lavandula angustifolia)

This oil is the most versatile and is referred to as the "Swiss Army Knife" of all oils.  A therapeutic grade of Lavender oil has been regarded highly for the skin. The fragrance has been known and clinically evaluated for its calming, relaxing properties and for balancing, emotionally and physically.

1. Relax

Lavender is known to work with the central nervous system to bring  calming and relaxing effects to the body. Apply 1-2 drops to the soles of the feet for a relaxing sensation. I also apply this to my children's feet just before bedtime, to help them calm down and settle.

2. Sleep Well

Along with applying it to the soles of your feet, rub a drop of lavender on your palms and smooth it on your pillow to aid sleep.

3. Cuts

As Lavender has natural anti-septic properties it can be applied to cuts and wounds. Drop one drop on the cut to stop the bleeding, clear the wound and kill bacteria.

4. Burns

Lavender also has  analgesic properties and can act as a pain killer as well as regenerating cell tissue. Drop 2-3 drops on the burn to help decrease pain and heal the skin. For sunburns, add several drops of Lavender in a clean, empty spray container with water and spray on area to relieve pain.

5. Eczema/Dermatitis

For larger areas that need treating, mix several drops of Lavender oil with a carrier oil, (virgin olive, almond, jojoba oil or Young Livings V6 oil) and use smooth over infected area.

6. Hay Fever

Rub a drop of Lavender oil between your palms and inhale deeply, you can also add a drop to your wrists and inhale throughout the day, topping up when needed.

7. Scar tissue

To reduce or minimise the formation of scarring tissue massage oil on or around the effected area. If applying to the face I always mix this with coconut or jojoba oil and use as a night cream.

8. Allergies

Diffuse 5-6 drops in a diffuser to alleviate symptoms of allergies.

9. Moths and Insects

Add a couple of drops of Lavender to a cotton ball and add to draws and closets to scent your clothes and repel moths and insects

10.  Sweaten Laundry

Add a few drops of lavender to a clean wet cloth and throw in the dryer to refreshen and fragrant clothes.

Lavender has many other beneficial properties for wellness and can be used around the home also. When purchasing essential oils ensure they are the purest form and do not contain any chemicals. The essential oils I use are a therapeutic-grade and they have been grown, distilled, harvested and bottled in a certain way and no chemicals have been added in the lab.
